Hosting lookup

Find a website's hosting provider

Hosting is not always one provider. WhosBuilt checks DNS, IP ownership, CDN behavior, SSL certificates, and HTTP headers so I can see the pieces separately.

Signals I check

  • DNS records and name servers
  • IP owner and hosting network
  • CDN and proxy headers
  • SSL issuer and certificate organization
  • Registrar and WHOIS context
  • Email provider records

The short answer

To find a website's hosting provider, check DNS first, then the IP network, then the HTTP headers. If the site uses a CDN or proxy, the first answer may be Cloudflare, Fastly, or Akamai instead of the origin host.

That context is useful. A public lookup should show the visible provider and the clues that support it.

Why hosting lookup is messy

A site can sit behind Cloudflare, use a Vercel frontend, send email through Google, and keep domain registration somewhere else. A single DNS result rarely tells the full story.

I treat hosting lookup as evidence gathering. The IP network might show the host. Headers might show a CDN or server platform. Name servers can point to DNS hosting. SSL and WHOIS records add ownership context when they are public.

How I check hosting clues

Name servers tell me who handles DNS. A and AAAA records tell me where the site resolves. The IP owner can point to a cloud provider, hosting company, or CDN. HTTP headers can show the edge platform, server, cache, or framework host.

SSL and WHOIS do not always name the host, but they add context. Registrar data can show where the domain is managed. Certificate details can show the organization or certificate authority. MX records show email hosting, which is separate but still useful.

What WhosBuilt reports

WhosBuilt shows the likely hosting and infrastructure providers with the raw clues beside them. If a site is behind a proxy, I want to see that instead of pretending there is one clean answer.

For a wider stack report, start with what is this website built with.
