Where to find candidate stores
Each source below gives you domains to check. None of them proves a store runs Shopify today.
Google with site:myshopify.com
Search site:myshopify.com plus a product word, such as site:myshopify.com "candles". Every Shopify store gets a myshopify.com address.
Limit. Stores that use their own domain usually redirect the myshopify.com address to it, so the results lean toward new, small or unlaunched stores.
Shopify-style URL paths
Search for a product word with inurl:/collections/ or inurl:/products/. Shopify themes use those paths for category and product pages.
Limit. Other platforms use the same paths, so treat every result as a candidate until it passes the checks below.
Shopify App Store reviews
Open the reviews of an app your buyers would also use. Each review shows the store name, the country and how long the store has used the app.
Limit. Store names aren't linked, so search each name to find its domain. A review shows the store used the app at some point, not that it still runs Shopify.
Shopify's shared IP address
Shopify's domain setup guide tells merchants to point their root domain at 23.227.38.65. Reverse IP lookup tools list domains seen on that address.
Limit. Reverse IP lists are partial, and some listings are old. Thousands of unrelated stores share the address, so the results aren't sorted by niche.
Store directories and technology lookup tools
BuiltWith, Store Leads and similar tools let you filter stores by platform, country or app. This is the fastest way to get a long list.
Limit. Check when each record was last seen. A store can move platforms or close after a directory recorded it.
How to check if a website is built on Shopify
On 22 October 2026, WhosBuilt ran these checks once against the four public example stores on the Shopify company list, tentree.com, maguireshoes.com, artisaire.com and goodeeworld.com. The header and DNS checks are the quickest. They work even when a store blocks automated page requests.
powered-by: Shopify response header
curl -sI https://www.tentree.com/ | grep -i powered-by
Seen on the four stores. All four. goodeeworld.com answered the request with HTTP 429 (too many requests), and that response still carried the header.
www host CNAME to shops.myshopify.com
dig +short CNAME www.tentree.com
Seen on the four stores. All four.
Root domain A record in 23.227.38.x
dig +short A tentree.com
Seen on the four stores. All four. Three used 23.227.38.65, the address in Shopify's setup guide; tentree.com used 23.227.38.32.
cdn.shopify.com or /cdn/shop/ assets, a Shopify.theme object and a *.myshopify.com store handle in the page source
View source, then search for "Shopify.theme" and "myshopify.com"
Seen on the four stores. Three of four. The fourth page wasn't read because of the 429 response.
shopify-verification TXT record
dig +short TXT tentree.com
Seen on the four stores. One of four. Don't require it.
Count a store when the header or DNS points at Shopify and the page source agrees. If only one check passes, mark it for a second look instead of adding it. To check a single domain without a terminal, run a WhosBuilt lookup or use the CMS checker.
What a Shopify marker doesn't tell you
A marker shows that the host you checked served a Shopify storefront on the day you checked. It doesn't show any of the following.
- The plan, including whether the store is on Shopify Plus
- Revenue, order volume or traffic
- Whether the merchant pays for or renews the plan
- Who runs the store or who to contact
Keep the check date next to every row. A list without dates can't tell you which stores have moved since. For the wider picture of company technology data, see what technographic data is and where it comes from.
